I recently interviewed Eric Nunzum podcast producer from NPR at one of our California Podcast Association meetings (which I am the Executive Director) He had an exercise is to come up with an 8-10-second description of your podcast.
This will help your association podcast down the road on defining your goals and giving clarity to your audience. Much like the “Sally” exercise helps you stay focused on episodes.
Basically, hone down your shows elevator pitch to explain and keep your podcast targeted fo your audience. He recommended 10 words maximum.
Sincerely X Podcast: Anonymous TED talks
TED Radio Hour Podcast: Fascinating ideas, astonishing inventions, fresh approaches to old problems, and new ways to think and create.
Try and boil down exactly what your podcast will be about, and why would it grab the attention of your members.
Please remember podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint. Investing time, money, and energy into producing a podcast just to have a podcast is pointless. I would advise against it. Everyone will launch a podcast and look at the downloads right away and be disappointed. But if you are doing it right, it will steadily grow. And will make you revenue, our clients are.
Coming up with a clear idea and goals is the key to a successful start of a podcast.
I hope these three steps have helped you figure out your show. If you need any help please reach out in the comments or email.
